Smooth Stone Paving LTD installs driveways, patios and landscaping across the Midlands. This site exists because block paving in Leicester is a specific job with its own problems: narrow Victorian frontages, shared accesses, front gardens that were never designed to drain, and estate plots where the boundary is a foot from the car door.
Over the years we have laid a lot of block paving in and around the city, and the pattern is consistent: the drives that fail are almost never let down by the blocks themselves. They fail because the sub-base was too thin, the edges were never haunched, or the falls sent water back towards the house. Blocks are just the bit you see.
So that is where we put the effort. Full excavation, a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base built up in layers, edge restraints set in concrete, correct falls, and joints properly locked with kiln-dried sand. It is not glamorous and it does not photograph well, but it is the reason a drive still looks right a decade later.

Sub-base depth and compaction are where a block paved driveway is won or lost. It is also the easiest place to cut corners, which is why we write the build-up into the quotation.

Paving in and Around Leicester
Leicester's housing stock changes street by street, and so does the paving job. The terraces around Highfields and Newfoundpool typically have short forecourts where the whole surface is visible from the pavement, so coursing and cuts have to be spot on. Interwar semis in Knighton, Stoneygate and Western Park usually have the depth for a proper two-car drive, often with a level change to resolve at the threshold.
Further out towards Beaumont Leys, Rushey Mead and Thurnby Lodge, plots are tighter and drainage is the recurring issue, with front gardens that were laid to lawn now needing to take a car without pushing water onto the pavement. That is where permeable blocks or a drainage channel discharging to a border earns its keep.

Yes. Alongside block paved driveways we install patios, pathways, kerbs, edgings and complete landscaping schemes, including lawns, planting and garden makeovers. That means a front-and-back project can be handled by one team rather than co-ordinating two trades.
How soon can you start?
It depends on the time of year and what is already booked in. We will give you a realistic start window when we quote rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you if the weather is likely to move it.
Do you work on commercial as well as domestic paving?
