Why Smooth Stone Paving

Block Paving That Is Built From the Ground Up

Almost every failed driveway we are called out to look at in Leicester failed underneath, not on top. These are the four things we refuse to rush.

Groundwork Done Properly

The part you never see decides how long a drive lasts. We excavate to full depth, compact a Type 1 sub-base in layers and set the falls before a single block is laid.

Set Out to the House

Coursing is squared off the property, not the pavement, so lines run true to your frontage and cuts land where they are least noticeable.

Edges That Hold

Every edge restraint is haunched in concrete. It is the detail that stops blocks creeping outwards and the surface loosening a few winters in.

Honest, Clear Quotations

Free, no-obligation quotations with the specification written down (depth, sub-base, block and edging) so you can compare like with like.

Leicester Block Paving

A Driveway That Suits the House It Belongs To

Leicester is a city of very different frontages. A Victorian terrace in Clarendon Park has a short, narrow forecourt where the coursing is on show from the pavement. A 1930s semi in Knighton or Western Park usually has room for a proper two-car drive with a turning area. The newer estates out towards Beaumont Leys and Rushey Mead tend to have tighter plots and shared boundaries where drainage has to be thought through before anything is dug.

We do not have one house style we apply everywhere. We look at what the property already gives you (the brickwork, the bay, the boundary wall, the fall of the land) and choose the block, colour and laying pattern that works with it. Herringbone for driveways carrying vehicles, stretcher bond where the run is narrow, a contrasting soldier course to frame the whole thing.

  • Full excavation and a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base
  • Edge restraints haunched in concrete on every run
  • Falls set so surface water goes where it should
  • Joints locked with kiln-dried sand and plate compacted

Frequently Asked Questions

Block Paving Questions, Answered

How long does a block paving driveway take to install in Leicester?

Most domestic driveways take between three and five working days, depending on the size of the area, how much excavation is needed and whether we are moving drainage or forming a new dropped kerb. We will give you a realistic timescale in writing with your quotation, and we tell you if the weather is likely to push it.

Do you provide free quotations?

Yes. Quoting costs you nothing and commits you to nothing. We come to the property, measure up, check the levels and where water currently runs, and talk through the block, colour and laying pattern before anything goes in writing. What you get back states the specification, not just a number.

Is block paving better than resin or tarmac?

It depends on what matters most to you. Block paving is the most repairable, because individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if a service is dug up or a stain will not shift. Resin gives a seamless, permeable finish with no joints for weeds. Tarmac is the most economical over a large area. We install all three, so we will give you a straight comparison rather than steering you.

Will a new block paved driveway need planning permission?

Front gardens are the area to watch. Surface water generally needs somewhere to go other than straight onto the highway, which is why permeable blocks, permeable jointing or a drainage channel discharging to a border are built into the design. If your project needs a dropped kerb or falls outside permitted development, we will tell you at quotation stage so it is dealt with properly.

How do I look after block paving once it is laid?

Very little is needed. Sweep it, wash it down occasionally, and top up the kiln-dried jointing sand every few years. That sand is what locks the blocks together, so it matters. Sealing is optional; it deepens the colour and makes the surface easier to clean, but a well-laid drive does not depend on it.
